Revenants
Rare
Revenants are mighty undead warriors who were once mortals driven by undying ambition. In life, they made an oath to someone of great importance, but due to certain circumstances, they ultimately broke that oath, betraying their ideals for a greater good or a greater evil. As a result, they rose again, their minds crude and feral, resembling wild beasts, yet with a tactical edge to being capable of commanding undead armies. Nevertheless, they remain chaotic, lacking structured thought. This can change, however, if a Revenant is bound or raised by an Enkindled with the Death domain. In such cases, the Revenant may regain fragments of their past mentality, personality, and general behavior, albeit colder and more twisted. They often struggle to reconnect with their mortal selves or express emotions properly, but at least they can think and make their own choices. This grants them the potential to stray from pure evil. Importantly, if bound or raised by an Enkindled, they lose most of their former powers, meaning a player who was previously an event character will no longer retain any special abilities. Lastly, they will no longer command armies of the dead. They will be compelled to follow the Enkindled's commands.
Habitat and Society
One may find a revenant typically in ruined fortresses, abandoned churches, or strewn across forgotten battlefields. Those who are unbound follow no structured culture; they obey only the rule of strength, seeking to conquer domains with mindless brutality. However, those who manage to reclaim their thoughts often appear noble or adhere to some twisted form of past ideals. They may even showcase paladin-like behaviors, albeit with more apathy or anger. One must note that it’s difficult to see them in public cities, for the dead are hated and hunted. A revenant player should keep that in mind.
Player Mechanics:
- PLAYABLE CREATURE: A Revenant can indeed be a player character, but an Enkindled may only create one Revenant at Apprentice rank, with one additional Revenant allowed for each rank gained afterward. They must always be player-controlled and should be documented on the Enkindled’s profile and with staff kept updated accordingly.
- Life of the Dead: Narratively and mechanically, the Revenant requires no sleep, food, drink, or breathing, nor do they possess any mortal needs. They do not feel pain unless it is magical in nature or caused by flames. Furthermore, if they are reduced to 0 vitality, they do not die unless their skull is deliberately crushed or destroyed, but instead will go into a 'passed out' state. Should the skull remain intact, the Revenant will rise again after 3 turns with half of their vitality. It ought to be noted, the Enkindled’s soul will be marked by shadows if they have a bound Revenant under their control for any roleplay purpose. Moreover, once slain, their Enkindled may hear their cries within one's mind and may need to create, or use a spell dedicated to raising them back alive. If the Enkindled that bound them is also forever killed, they too will die.
- Undead Form: The Revenant's appearance will always be decaying or gruesome, or sometimes, they may have magical glows. Generally, their appearance and aesthetic can be quite freeform. However, an Enkindled with death domain may easily change their undead appearance, or spend 1 Astrium to make the undead look like their mortal selves, but more pale-ish and sickly for THREE OOC hours. It's safe to say the stench of decay cannot be removed, and gradually the disguise will worsen.
- Paths of Power: Revenants are neither stronger nor weaker than an average player character and maintain the mechanics of their original race. They must follow the normal skills system, gaining no additional points or unique benefits, and they share the same vitality as other characters unless otherwise specified. However, there are limitations to what they may pursue. They are unable to be ignited to become Enkindled. They may, however, become Faithful under the Executioner, the Court (if applicable), the Outrider, the Umbral, and only the Tactician as a lesser god, and their Faithful Scriptures will always look darkly and shadowy. They can pursue the Martial but not the HUNGER.
- Foul Tongue: Revenants may freely speak with undead creatures to communicate in a language that sounds distorted and alienish to mortals, and yet this does not grant them the ability to issue commands. However, in any event or scenario, they gain a +1 bonus to Charisma when attempting to persuade or influence undead beings.
